The Ultimate Guide to Snorkeling Klein Bonaire

Sea turtle gliding over the reef at Klein Bonaire

What makes Klein Bonaire so special?

Eight hundred metres off Kralendijk's waterfront sits an island with no roads, no buildings, and no inhabitants — just sand, scrub, and one of the healthiest reefs in the Caribbean. Klein Bonaire is protected as part of the Bonaire National Marine Park, and the whole island functions as a no-take marine reserve: no fishing, no anchoring on coral, no touching the reef. That protection is exactly why the snorkelling here still feels the way the Caribbean is supposed to.

Slip below the surface and you'll see what all that care has bought. Turtles are regulars — especially in the mornings — alongside parrotfish, angelfish, and queen triggerfish weaving through stands of elkhorn and staghorn coral. Every so often, a dolphin pod passes through. On calm days, visibility runs 20 to 30 metres, which means you'll spot the reef long before you reach it.

The best snorkel spots around Klein Bonaire

The East Side Beach: a shallow barrier reef in as little as two metres of water. You barely have to kick before the coral starts — the density here is remarkable, and it's the ideal place for first-timers to find their fins.

The Drop-Off: on the western side, the reef wall falls away into deep blue, and the change in colour underneath you is a moment people remember. Experienced snorkellers love it here, and for good reason — eagle rays and sea turtles frequently cruise along the wall.

The Sandy Beach Area: the north side's shallow reef rewards the patient. Hover quietly and you'll find smaller reef species going about their day, including fish cleaning stations — the reef's own service industry at work.

How to get to Klein Bonaire: your options compared

Water taxi: the simple, affordable option — per-person service from Karel's Beach Bar and Eden Beach Resort on hourly schedules. You're on your own once you land, so bring your own supplies and snorkel gear.

Shared snorkel tour: small-group tours with guides, equipment and refreshments included. A good middle ground if you'd like someone pointing out what you're looking at.

Private catamaran charter: the unhurried version. Full-day experiences departing from Plaza Resort, with crew-guided snorkelling, meals and refreshments — the island on your schedule, not the boat's.

What to bring for a day at Klein Bonaire

Essentials: reef-safe sunscreen (standard sunscreen is banned in the marine park — the rangers take the reef seriously, and so should you), a rashguard for protection, and your Bonaire Nature Fee (purchase at infobonaire.com).

Recommended: an underwater camera or GoPro — you'll want proof of that turtle — plus extra water and snacks, and a dry bag for valuables. Private charter guests can pack lighter: snorkel equipment, towels and cold drinks are all provided.

The best time of day to visit Klein Bonaire

Morning (7am–11am): the wildlife hour. Turtles in particular are most active early, the light is excellent for photography, and you'll share the water with fewer visitors.

Afternoon (12pm–4pm): the water is warmer and there's more boat traffic, but the snorkelling remains excellent — this is still Klein Bonaire, after all.

Late afternoon into sunset: the island turns gold, the sea goes soft, and the views become the kind you don't photograph so much as sit inside. Sunset charters with dinner are especially popular — book ahead.
